What Do Parish Councillors Do?
Your Councillors have three main areas of work:
*Decision-making: through attending meetings and keeping up-to-date with local happenings, councillors decide which activities to support, where money should be spent, what services should be delivered and what policies should be implemented;
*Monitoring: councillors can monitor decisions and check on their progress by making sure they are leading to the desired outcome. They do this by keeping tabs on how well things are working.
*Getting involved locally: as local representatives, councillors have responsibilities towards their parishioners and local organisations. All parish councillors are in this voluntarily, many are in full-time work and therefore this often depends on how much time is available.
The day-to-day work of a councillor may include:
*regular contact with the council for example in working towards having roads resurfaced
*going to meetings of local organisations
*going to meetings of bodies that affect the wider community
* bringing parishioners concerns to the attention of the council or the media
* talking and listening to their fellow parishioners
Your local councillors continually strive to represent the aspirations of the public they serve
