There were quite a few shops in this area in times gone by. According to the Records, there was a cloggers and dressmakers opposite Plea Knowes, the Blacksmiths near Stoneygate, West Cumbrian Farmbers and of course the local pubs.
There was the Huntsman or Annie Jane’s pub. She served Muller Ale and whenever she was really busy at night, she would serve all drinks for half-a-crown to make for easy counting.
There was also a sweet shop and a shop next door to the Bridge Inn. This was a Post Office too.
There was a shop at Pleaknowe that later included a post office. The photographs on this page are of Millican’s van. Millicans had a shop down at the Old Station. They sold groceries, meal etc. before WCF took over. Photographs on this page are around 80 years old. Millicans van travelled into Bewcastle every week.
