Improved service for Rural Wheels
Improvements are being made to a transport scheme that provides travel for people
living in rural areas. From September 5, Cumbria County Council’s Rural Wheels will be offering an enhanced service with an increase in the hours and days it operates and improved booking arrangements.
Currently Rural Wheels operates Monday-Friday between 9am and 5pm but from next month this will increase to operating between 8.30am and 6pm Monday-Saturday. And it will now only need one day’s notice rather than two to book your trip with Rural Wheels - which transports people in areas where scheduled public transport is not viable.
People will also be able to sign up to the scheme over the telephone from September 5
rather than having to fill out a paper form and passengers sharing transport will benefit from a reduced rate of 25 pence per mile.
Passengers living more than 10 miles from their nearest town will be charged at a
maximum rate of £3.50 per single journey. These improvements to the service have been made possible thanks to an award of £288,000 for Cumbria for 2011/12 from the Government’s community transport transitional fund.
This Department for Transport (DfT) funding is specifically for community transport in areas where bus services are not viable and can’t be used to fund regular bus routes.
Cllr Tim Knowles, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member for transport, said: "Rural Wheels has shown itself to be a really effective and efficient transport service for people living in areas where running buses is just not viable.
"These enhancements that are being made will make it even easier, more convenient
and cheaper to use and I hope more people will be encouraged to sign up to the
scheme.”
A period of consultation with county councillors and parish councils has helped to
shape the range of improvements which also includes developing new voluntary social car schemes, supporting scheduled community transport services, the introduction of community minibus driver training, and working with partners to develop access to activities for young people.
